Architecture & Design
Inspired by the traditional setup of the estate, renowned architect João Mendes Ribeiro preserved the original structure of the compound. The restored buildings as well as new edifices revolve around an ancient tower. In remodeling the old farmhouses, the general composition of the shell was retained with the insertion of new openings where needed. The new structures have been framed in the image of the existing architecture with concrete shells, masonry walls, and concrete slab roofs; yet they maintain a contemporary language at the same time. In keeping with the wide, flat landscape of the Alentejo wine region, the low-lying buildings generally have one floor.
